Rep. Rose: TikTok Currently Poses ‘Clear and Present Danger’ to the United States

WASHINGTON, DC—U.S. Representative John Rose (TN-06) spoke on the House Floor Tuesday in support of legislation curtailing foreign adversaries from targeting, surveilling, and manipulating the American people online.

The full remarks, as prepared for delivery, are below:

Mister Speaker, TikTok currently poses an undoubtedly clear and present danger to the United States and its users across the country.

With 170 million users in the United States, including two out of every three American teenagers, we cannot turn a blind eye to the enormous risk this app, with ties to the Chinese Communist party, poses.

That’s why I rise in support of the “Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act”. This bipartisan bill, which passed unanimously out of committee, aims to prevent foreign adversaries from targeting, surveilling, and manipulating the American people online. It would specifically apply to apps controlled by China, Iran, North Korea, or Russia.

Let me be clear: this bill does not ban TikTok. It simply requires Tik Tok to divest and separate itself from control by the Chinese government. We must prioritize the safety and security of our nation.
