Rep. Burchett votes to prevent illegal immigrants from voting in Washington elections

WASHINGTON, D.C., (May 23, 2024) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted in favor of H.R. 192 which would prevent noncitizens from voting in Washington, D.C. elections.

“You shouldn’t get a vote in this country if you’re not an American citizen, especially not in our nation’s capital. It’s that simple. If you want to vote, come to the United States through the proper channels and become a legal citizen. Otherwise, sit down.” said Rep. Burchett.

H.R. 192 prohibits noncitizens from voting in Washington, D.C. local elections for public office, including any ballot initiative or D.C. referendum. It also repeals the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, which allows noncitizens and illegal immigrants to vote in local elections and even run for public office. This act was enacted on November 21, 2022, despite opposition from the mayor.

Federal law prohibits noncitizens from voting in federal elections. State and local election laws are left to their respective legislatures, but Congress has direct legislative authority over Washington, D.C.
