Rep. Burchett votes to impeach DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 7, 2024) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) released a statement after voting in favor of the impeachment articles filed against Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas.

“I wish we had gotten this done, and the reality is it should've been done a long time ago,” said Rep. Burchett. “Secretary Mayorkas shouldn't have a job. For over three years he has purposefully destroyed or ignored every safeguard we had in place to keep this country safe. I'm hoping we get this done next week when we have everyone back.”

The impeachment articles moved out of the House Rules Committee by an 8-4 vote on Monday, February 5th. The first article of impeachment states that Secretary Mayorkas has "willfully and systematically refused to comply with Federal immigration laws." The second article of impeachment accuses Secretary Mayorkas of "breach of public trust."

Rep. Blake Moore (UT-01) changed his vote from 'yes' to 'no' as a procedural move so that House Republicans could bring the impeachment resolution up for another vote.
