Rep. Burchett votes to hold AG Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress

WASHINGTON, D.C., (June 12, 2024) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted in favor of a resolution to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress.

"Merrick Garland refused to comply with subpoenas from two House committees, including one I'm on, in order to stop President Biden's interview recordings from getting out. That's contempt of Congress plain and simple. If our attorney general doesn't think the law applies to him, that's a serious problem." Said Rep. Burchett.

H.Res. 1292 holds Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with dual congressional subpoenas from the House Oversight Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

Garland refused to turn over audio recordings of President Joe Biden’s interview with special counsel Robert Hur in the case regarding President Biden’s mishandling of classified documents after the committees subpoenaed them. In his report, Hur described President Biden as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

H.Res. 1292 passed 216-207.
