Rep. Burchett votes in favor of bill to secure southern border

WASHINGTON, D.C., (May 11, 2023) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted to pass legislation to secure the southern border of the United States.

H.R. 2, the Secure the Border Act of 2023 requires the Department of Homeland Security to resume construction of the border wall, provides grants for border security operations, and closes loopholes in the asylum system. The bill would also expand the types of crimes that may make an individual ineligible for asylum as well as increase penalties for overstaying a visa.

“At some point you have to look at the damage you've caused and admit that what you're doing isn't working,” said Rep. Burchett. “The truth of the matter is, we have millions of people coming to our country unlawfully and we have no idea who most of these people are. This bill will require President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to do the jobs they signed up for and give them the resources to do it.”

The U.S. House of Representatives voted on this bill the same day that Title 42 is being lifted and is set to dramatically increase the number of illegal immigrant crossings.
