Rep. Burchett statement on motion to vacate Speaker

WASHINGTON, D.C., (May 8, 2024) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) released a statement following his vote in favor of tabling the motion to vacate Speaker Mike Johnson.

“When I voted to remove the previous speaker, I knew we would get a Republican to replace him," said Rep. Burchett. "That is no longer the case. If we remove Speaker Johnson from his seat, we'll likely get a Democrat to replace him, or a more moderate Republican who is supported by Democrats. We can't take that chance. I'll keep pushing for Speaker Johnson to fight for responsible, conservative values in his position, but I couldn't vote to remove him knowing his replacement will likely be worse.”

The motion to table the motion to vacate passed by a vote of 359-43.
