NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Today, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee and First Lady Maria Lee welcomed more than 100 families from across the state to the Tennessee Residence for a carnival celebrating their completion of the Tennessee Kids Serve Summer Challenge.
“Bill and I were thrilled to celebrate another impactful Tennessee Kids Serve Summer Challenge with students at the Tennessee Residence Carnival,” said First Lady Maria Lee. “We were touched to hear first-hand how Tennessee kids gave back in their communities and are hopeful that their hearts for service will continue to grow long past the summer.”
The Governor and First Lady met with summer challenge participants and their families to congratulate them on their summer of service and encourage them to continue serving others. The event also included carnival games, prizes, snacks, special appearances from local sports’ team mascots, and remarks from the Governor and First Lady.
This year marked the sixth annual Tennessee Kids Serve Summer Challenge as a part of the First Lady’s Tennessee Serves initiative. The challenge invited all Tennessee elementary students from rising kindergarten through rising sixth grade to devote a portion of their summer to serving others.
More than 800 students participated in this year’s challenge and served a record-breaking number of 3,363 hours in 60 counties.
