Congressman Kustoff Introduces Legislation to Return U.S. Secret Service to the Department of the Treasury

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman David Kustoff (R-TN) and Chairman Roger Williams (R-TX) introduced the United States Secret Service Mission Improvement and Realignment Act of 2023. This bill would improve the Secret Services' investigative priorities by moving the United States Secret Service from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security back to the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

"The Secret Service is responsible for protecting elected officials and combating criminal threats to the U.S. financial system,"said Congressman Kustoff. "The United States Secret Service Mission Improvement and Realignment Act is a crucial step towards ensuring the Secret Service has the tools it needs to effectively protect our financial system and our entire country."
The United States Secret Service was established in 1865 by President Abraham Lincoln and was housed under the U.S. Department of the Treasury for 138 years. The agency was created in 1865 to combat the rise of counterfeit currency following the Civil War. In 2002, the Homeland Security Act created the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and transferred the United States Secret Service from the U.S. Department of the Treasury over to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
