Burchett votes to protect women and girls in sports; passes House

WASHINGTON, D.C., (Apr. 20, 2023) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted in favor of H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act. This bill would provide women and girls equal opportunity in athletics and a fair playing field by ensuring that athletic departments follow Title IX rules that protect the integrity of women's sports.

“There's no reason men should be competing in girls' sports,” said Rep. Burchett. "This is about protecting the opportunities and safety of female athletes everywhere."

The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act ensures a level playing field and strengthens existing protections for women by:

  • Clarifying that sex in the context of athletics must be recognized only by a person's sex at birth.
  • Stating that a recipient of federal education funding violates Title IX if the recipient allows a male to compete in an athletic program that is designated for women or girls.
  • Clarifies the bill does not prohibit males from practicing with female athletes.
