Burchett votes for bill to protect female athletes under Title IX

WASHINGTON, D.C., (July 11, 2024) – Today, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) voted in favor of H.J.Res. 165, which would overturn a Biden administration rule that would cover men who identify as women under Title IX of the Civil Rights Act. Rep. Burchett is an original cosponsor of the bill.

“Title XI of the Civil Rights Act was passed to protect women from being unfairly denied opportunities in education and sports. Allowing men to compete in women’s sports takes trophies, changes, and even careers away from hardworking female athletes.” Said Rep. Burchett in his debate remarks on the House floor.

The bill passed 210-205

BACKGROUND:

On April 19, 2024, the Biden administration finalized a rule that includes gender identity as a protected category under the Title IX, which enables men who identify as women to compete in women’s sports and invade their locker rooms. The rule is set to take effect on August 1, 2024.

H.J.Res. 165 would reverse this ruling to protect the safety and opportunities of female athletes. The full text of the resolution can be found here
